CHURCH OF POWER: CAUTION – GOD AT WORK

On Sunday Pastor Jeremy Johnson continued our series “Church of Power” by showing us how the modern day church has forfeited power in the name of convenience, whereas the early church of Acts was just that - a church who acted and moved in power.

Jesus commanded the disciples to wait on the Holy Spirit because it was the Holy Spirit that was going to enable them to do what they were called to do. Acts 1:8 states, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” To walk in power is not some charismatic thing, it’s something that Jesus commanded us to wait for and receive so that we could be effective in our call.

As shown in Acts 2, the power of the Holy Spirit first came through a sound, and then a representation of that sound was seen through the speaking of other tongues. Mockers claimed that they were drunk on wine, but Peter quickly revealed that drunkenness was not the cause. What they were seeing was evidence of the prophesied outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

As Christians we are really good at making a sound. We shout from the rooftops, “Jesus loves you,” but when people look up to see what they’ve heard, we crouch down hoping they don’t see us. If we only become a sound and not a representation of that sound, people will mistake the sound for something else. People are done with the voice of religion telling them what they can and cannot do. They want power. That’s why films that have any supernatural element in them have sold out crowds. We were created with a hole inside of us that can only be filled is by the super God encountering the natural us.

How do we walk in power? By listening to that still small voice prompting us to pray for someone. When we step out in faith, we are giving the super a chance to come into the natural. When we get bored with Christianity, we’ve fallen into religion, which is form without power. Ask God to show up in your life and to rekindle the fire inside of you today!
